Medical Equipment - Zircon Blocks, Why Use Hydraulic Press To Press?

11

Zircon blocks refer to zirconium oxide ceramics, which are commonly used in the medical field for artificial joints, dental implants, etc., because of their high strength and biocompatibility.
Hydraulic presses are characterized by providing stable and uniform pressure, which may be required during the pressing process to ensure consistent material density. Zirconia powder requires high pressure during pressing to form a compact structure and reduce porosity, so that the sintered product can have better mechanical properties.

Hydraulic presses are easier to control the amount of pressure and hold time than mechanical presses, which is important for medical devices with complex shapes, especially parts that require high precision.

Hydraulic systems may provide longer holding time, allowing powder particles to better combine and reduce the risk of delamination or cracking.

Although the initial investment of hydraulic presses may be higher, they are more efficient when handling large-scale production and are suitable for the needs of the medical industry. In addition, the pressing of zirconium oxide powder may require higher pressure, which is more advantageous for hydraulic presses than pneumatic or other types of presses.
Zirconia powder may not have good flowability and requires uniform pressure distribution to avoid defects after pressing. The large-area pressure application of hydraulic presses may be more effective, ensuring uniform density across the entire compact, which is critical for the subsequent sintering step, otherwise uneven density may cause deformation or insufficient strength.

The adjustability of the hydraulic press. Different products may require different pressure parameters. The hydraulic press can be flexibly adjusted to meet the production needs of a variety of products. In addition, the hydraulic system may be better in overload protection to avoid damage to the mold or equipment due to excessive pressure, which is particularly important for the production of high-value medical devices.

Compared with other pressing technologies:

Mechanical stamping: The pressure peak is high but the uniformity is poor, which can easily lead to uneven stress inside the blank.

Isostatic pressing (CIP): Although isotropic pressure can be achieved, the equipment cost is high and the cycle is long. It is suitable for special shapes rather than mass production.

Injection molding: Suitable for small and complex parts, but binders need to be added, and the subsequent degreasing process is complicated, which may affect the purity of the material.

The core advantage of the hydraulic press in pressing zircon blocks lies in its high pressure, uniformity and controllable characteristics, which can meet the stringent requirements of medical devices for high density, high precision and complex structures, while taking into account production efficiency and cost control.
