As modern agriculture shifts toward greener, more eco-friendly, and sustainable practices, coco coir seedling pots are increasingly emerging as an alternative to traditional plastic seedling containers.
Made primarily from coconut husk fibers, these pots are produced through a series of processes, including fiber preparation, blending, molding via hydraulic press, and drying. They are widely used in agricultural seedling production, greenhouse cultivation, horticulture, and the raising of young plants and trees.
In the manufacturing of coco coir seedling pots, a hydraulic press is a critical piece of equipment, essential for ensuring consistent shaping and enabling mass production.

What is a coir seedling cup?

Coir seedling cups-also known as coconut fiber seedling cups, coir pots, or biodegradable seedling containers-are horticultural planting products made primarily from natural coconut fiber.
They come in various types and shapes, including coir bricks, coir blocks, and seedling cups.
Natural coir (coconut fiber) is relatively loose; transforming it into seedling pots with uniform dimensions and a stable structure requires appropriate molds and pressing equipment.
Compared to traditional plastic seedling cups, coir seedling cups offer the following features:
Good breathability
The fibrous structure facilitates air exchange around the root zone, while the coconut fiber itself offers a degree of water absorption and moisture retention.
Convenient for transplanting
Seedling cups can be planted directly into the ground along with the seedlings, minimizing root disturbance that typically occurs when removing plants from traditional pots.
Eco-friendly and biodegradable
Made from natural coconut fiber and suitable biodegradable binding agents, these products can gradually decompose under appropriate environmental conditions.
Readily available raw materials
Coconut husks are an agricultural by-product, offering value through resource reuse.
Why is a hydraulic press needed for the production of coir seedling pots?
A hydraulic press uses a hydraulic system to generate controllable pressure, which compresses a coconut fiber mixture within a mold to form seedling cups of a specified shape.

Providing Stable Molding Pressure
Coir fiber is characterized by its loose, fluffy, and irregular nature. Without sufficient pressing force, the resulting products may suffer from a loose structure, unstable shape, or uneven wall thickness.
Hydraulic presses allow for the adjustment of pressure based on mold dimensions and material properties, ensuring the fiber material is properly shaped within the mold.
Hydraulic presses allow for the adjustment of pressure based on mold dimensions and material properties, ensuring the fiber material is properly shaped within the mold.
This process combines hydraulic pressing with mold heating; by applying specific temperature, pressure, and dwell time (holding time), the coir fiber and binding agents are consolidated into a stable product structure.

Enhancing Dimensional Consistency
Different clients have varying requirements regarding the diameter, height, wall thickness, and appearance of seedling cups.
By using hydraulic presses in conjunction with custom-designed molds, it is possible to produce seedling containers in circular, square, or other configurations.
When raw material input, mold design, and molding parameters are effectively controlled, the dimensional consistency of the products can be significantly improved.
Hydraulic molding machines can be integrated with multi-station molds, automated feeding and demolding systems, and PLC controls to elevate the level of mechanized production.
Production Process for Coir Seedling Cups
Production Process Overview
Step 1: Processing of Coconut Fiber Raw Material
Coconut husks are processed into coconut fiber suitable for production, followed by cleaning, screening, and moisture content adjustment.
Step 2: Material Mixing
In accordance with the specific production process, binding agents are added, and the fibers are thoroughly mixed with these additives. Some processes may incorporate materials such as natural latex.

Step 3: Filling the Mold
Evenly place a specific weight of the coir-based mixture into the molding die used for the seedling cups.
Step 4: Hydraulic Pressing
Use a hydraulic press to close the mold and apply pressure to the material. If a hot-pressing process is employed, it is also necessary to control the mold temperature and the duration for which pressure is maintained.

Step 5: Demolding and Drying
Once the pressing process is complete, remove the formed seedling cups. Depending on the specific formulation, the products may require further drying, cooling, or curing.
Step 6: Product Inspection and Packaging
Inspect the products for dimensions, wall thickness, structural strength, surface quality, and moisture content. Once they pass inspection, the products are packaged.

How to select a four-column hydraulic press suitable for the production of coir-based seedling pots?

Before purchasing equipment, the following technical requirements must be clarified:
1.Diameter, height, and wall thickness of the seedling cups
Number of units produced per molding cycle and the number of mold cavities
2.Target production volume (per hour or per day)
3.Types of coir (coconut fiber) raw material and binder used
4.Requirement for mold heating
5.Requirement for automated feeding and demolding systems
6.Power supply and equipment installation conditions at the production site
The tonnage of the hydraulic press should be calculated based on the projected area of the mold, the required molding pressure, and an appropriate safety margin; it should not be determined solely by the diameter of the product.
